The Sixth International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation (SEMC 2016) was successfully hosted by the University of Cape Town from 5 to 7 September 2016. According to conference founder and chair, Prof. Alphose Zingoni of the EBE Department of Civil Engineering, “The SEMC conferences, held every 3 years since 2001, aim at bringing together from around the world academics, researchers and practitioners in the fields of structural engineering, computational mechanics and related disciplines, to review recent achievements in the advancement of knowledge and understanding in these areas, share the latest developments, and address the challenges that the present and the future pose”.
Congratulations to Kevin Sack who received the SA Association for the Advancement of Science – S2A3 medal. The medal serves to commend outstanding research students graduating at the Master's level. Kevin’s Master’s degree was awarded with distinction in the dissertation and the degree with distinction. His supervisor was Dr Sebastian Skatulla.
Dr Sebastian Skatulla is a recipient of the Claude Leon Merit Award for Early-Career Researchers which is given to encourage the outstanding scholarly achievements as a young researcher.
Professor Alphose Zingoni’s book, Vibration Analysis & Structural Dynamics for Civil Engineers (ISBN 978-0-415-52256-4), published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis UK), was formally launched in the New Engineering Building on the Upper Campus of UCT on 15 April 2015.
Dr Sebastian Skatulla in the Department of Civil Engineering has been elected as Member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ISCCBE) from 15 February 2015.
At a function hosted by Programme Director, Prof. Alphose Zingoni (former HOD), 16 exceptional students from across UCT were presented with Bathe Leadership Scholarships by UCT Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Max Price. Among the recipients was Nozipo Gwaza (2nd-Year BSc Civil Engineering student). The Department conveys its hearty congratulations to her.
